MISSION OF THE MONTH

April Mission of the Month – This month the Missions Committee is focusing on the Hartville Migrant Council and Mercy Ships.

The Hartville Migrant Council is an interdenominational Christian organization founded in 1962 which provides Christian ministry to migrant farm worker families in the Hartville, Ohio area.  The Council fosters a sense of personal worth, belonging and responsibility in migrant families. Some of the Hartville Migrant Council’s services include: welcome boxes, a medical clinic, adult and children’s education programs and a children’s recreation program.

Mercy Ships is a global charity that operates a fleet of hospital ships that provide medical care, relief aid and training for long-term sustainable change in developing nations. Mercy Ships models its operations after the example of Jesus Christ, by bringing healing and hope to the poor no matter what their race, gender or religion. The Missions Committee’s 2006 donation helped launch their newest ship, the Africa Mercy, to be deployed in war-devastated Liberia.

September Mission of the Month - The Missions Committee has the wonderfully rewarding responsibility of researching dozens of charitable organizations as potential recipients of our tithing budget.  The works of these organizations are powerful examples of God’s promise to care for those in need.  We encourage you to support these charities in any manner you feel appropriate.  The Missions Committee welcomes suggestions for organizations that you feel worthy of our support.  Please forward any suggestions to the Missions Committee mail box, or directly to a committee member.  All proposed recipients are reviewed for their effectiveness and alignment with our statement of purpose as printed in the Missions Committee Handbook.

This month we are focusing on the needs for disaster relief in Painesville with the aftermath of the floods.  We have researched different agencies that are active in the local area providing disaster relief and have identified the programs managed by the Salvation Army’s Northeast Ohio Division.  They have been on site providing meals, snacks, beverages, clean-up kits and other necessary services.  Recent statistics on The Salvation Army’s response can be found below:

13 Officers have provided approximately 300 hours of service

146 volunteers have provided over 2200 hours of service

12 staff members have provided over 1000 hours of service

4 EDS canteens, 2 trailers, 3 vans and 13 other assistance vehicles are on site

Canteens (mobile feeding units) are providing service at 6 locations

Over 1200 meals, 7000 snacks and 17,000 beverages have been served

Over 700 clean-up kits, 700 comfort kits, 2100 food bags and over 6800 misc. cleaning supplies have been distributed

Clean-up kits provide residents with the necessary materials to clear debris from their homes and clean some of the damage that has been left.

Comfort kits are given to residents to provide them with water, snacks, tissues, teddy bears for young children and a Bible or other reading material.

Approximately 3000 items of clothing have been given to those in need

Over 700 families have been assisted as well as over 9000 individuals

Your continued prayer and support for those affected by the recent flooding is most appreciated. Anyone wanting to donate to the recovery effort may send a donation earmarked "disaster relief" to their local Salvation Army, call 1.800.SAL.ARMY or visit them online at www.salvationarmyusa.org

AUGUST MISSION OF THE MONTH – Our mission of the month is The Salvation Army of Portage County.

The Salvation Army’s Shoes on My Feet program collaborates with the public school system to provide shoes for children in need that are identified by the school.  The program is available to children enrolled in any Portage County School that has been identified by the school nurse, counselor or principal, as needing a pair of shoes.

The Northeast Portage Food Shelf and Emergency Assistance program is operating to help people in Windham/Garrettsville and surrounding areas receive food and other supplies to help them meet basic human needs.  The food shelf is open and emergency assistance is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Comprehensive Emergency & Financial Assistance Program helps address the immediate financial crisis of clients, while encouraging and supporting them in their efforts to manage on their own.  Some will struggle for a time, but others will always be on the edge of crisis.  For both, the Salvation Army has designed this program.
